Delete Discussion I need help esp. from those of you who live in the 'down under' or have visited there. My mom is teaching an adult VBS (a week long Bible study) with the theme being traveling on a train through various parts of Australia.

What I need is some decorating ideas that are not too expensive (ideas dealing either with trains/train stations in Australia or just Australia itself). Stephen and I have thought of the idea of setting up a side of the room to look like a train station but don't know if stations look different in Australia or even if that is a possibility. I will get a map of Australia to display but beyond that, am not sure. So ANY help/ideas would be appreciated.

Also she is interested in knowing if there is any candy or 'treats' that are native to Australia that she might serve her class. Thanks in advance for any input you can give me.

i also thought you could construct a sign with cities posted with arrow and number of kilometers needed to travel..
ie, sydney, melbourne...
kind of like you see in england ireland it's a white wood sign with black letters..

maybe a description and list of different types of kangaroo or koala bears could be interesting.
you have to find vegimite somewhere..

Great ideas--esp love the sign ideas..esp since the idea is 'traveling through' Australia. Thanks, my friend.

I reply as a citizen in the neighbouring country of our Aussie friends (see em kinda like big brother and sister, complete with competitive sibling rivalry, but I'm yet to meet an Aussie who I haven't liked)....anyway - the point :

I think 1, singular image in a miniature collage of a kangaroo or koala, wouldn't really accurately describe the personality of that nation - to me, when I think of Australia, I see an explosion of individualisms in the world and a unique cultural flavour, that being said...

How about 1 cartoon depiction of a koala (cuter, I think) - holding a cricket bat (their most popular summer sport) in one paw, another paw looped through the strap of a backpack (keen travellers by nature, I reckon they are), with one foot-paw wearing a tramping boot and the other a rugby boot (rugby-type sports = most popular winter sports) - it could wear a wide brimmed hat with corks hanging off it, characteristic of an item of clothing unique to that nation, and parade itself with an Australian flag protruding from it's hiking-styled backpack.

Perhaps add a valiant pose, as though it just climbed Mt Everest....OOH! You could put him/her at the top of Aers..Eers...dunno how to spell it, but that giant rock that's smack dab in the middle of the country.

Point is that, from those Aussies I've met and it seems apparent from all I see around that, like any nationality, they're incredibly proud and nationalistic people, but it should also be insinuated that Aussies are generally very relaxed and well humoured by nature - I think the koala image'd reflect that - serious, but in a humourous way.

Daniel,
You crack me up--but you are right the very few 'aussies' I have met or know via online have been pretty darn friendly and laid back--which I totally love. You gave me some images, I'd not thought about too. Stephen and I would love one day to visit Australia and it's neighboring sibling (New Z). :-) Thanks for your input--always appreciated.
